StepDerby Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 7, 2026
Overview
StepDerby is a walking race app. It uses your step count to move your cat in a challenge and show race progress.
StepDerby is designed to be privacy-first: no ads, no tracking, no sale of user data, no third-party analytics SDKs, no location collection, no contacts import, and no raw HealthKit records stored by StepDerby.
HealthKit data
StepDerby asks for permission to read your Apple Health step count through HealthKit. Step count is used to move your cat in a race, calculate challenge progress, and show race status in the app, widgets, and Apple Watch experience.
StepDerby does not read or store raw HealthKit samples in its own database. You can revoke Health access at any time in Apple Health or iOS Settings.
Data stored on your device
StepDerby may store app data on your device, including local race settings, selected cat, race history, Health authorization state, and the latest race summary for widgets and Apple Watch.
Shared race data
If you create or join a shared race, StepDerby may use iCloud / CloudKit to sync challenge information with other participants. Shared race data may include a race code, challenge style and goal, participant display name, selected cat, last update time, pending invite display names, and an app-generated participant id.
In the current beta, iCloud does not upload Health steps while the HealthKit and CloudKit review question is unresolved. Friends in the same shared race can see your display name, selected cat, rank based on the current shared value, and last update time. Raw Health data is not shared.
Apple Watch and complications
If you use StepDerby with Apple Watch, the iPhone app sends the Watch a derived race summary. The Watch app and its complications may receive challenge steps and goal progress, current rank, nearby leaderboard summary, selected cat or race background presentation, and last update time.
Apple Watch receives derived race summary data only. It does not receive raw Health records and does not query HealthKit directly.
Data we do not collect
StepDerby does not collect location, contacts, advertising identifiers, medical records, raw HealthKit records, or data for third-party advertising or tracking.
